Aikido Training

"Only when you can lead another person's mind and Ki can you effectively lead that person's body. Therefore, before you can lead your partner's mind and Ki, you must first learn to control your own mind and body. In other words, before you can win over other people, you must first practice to win over yourself."

- Koichi Tohei Sensei

We use exercises and Aikido techniques to practice the central Principles of Aikido. The Principles we practice are two-fold and come from the teachings of Morihei Ueshiba and Koichi Tohei.

    Principles of Mind-Body Coordination:
        1.    Keep One-Point
        2.    Relax Completely
        3.    Keep Weight Underside
        4.    Extend Ki

    Principles of Aikido:
        1.    Extend Ki
        2.    Know Your Opponent's Mind
        3.    Respect your Opponent's Ki
        4.    Put Yourself in Your Opponent's Place
        5.    Perform with Confidence

In the first portion of class, we use a variety of exercises to practice the Principles. In the second portion of class, we use Aikido techniques to practice the Principles.

While our association and dojo are independent, our style of aikido most closely follows our lineage, which comes out of the ki-aikido tradition.

In general, our practice is focused on physical movement from the center, blending with an attack, and leading the energy to neutralize the attack.

Taigi (Aikido Kata)
Taigi were developed by Koichi Tohei as a training tool to practice all of the principles of Mind-Body Coordination and Aikido while practicing technique with a partner.
Most taigi are practiced with one uke and one nage performing six techniques once on each side.
Our dojo does use taigi as a training tool. However, we do not focus training on preset times established for taigi competition.

The creation of a personal taigi is part of our 1st kyu (brown belt) exam. Occasionally, a student presents a taigi that is deemed worth study and practice, and it is included in our list of taigi for practice.
